Many of our visitors asking why cosmetics and perfume do not have production and expiration date printed.
According to FDA: There are no regulations or requirements under current United States law that require cosmetic manufacturers to print expiration dates on the labels of cosmetic products… The European Union’s Cosmetic Directive, as amended in 1993, requires expiration dating only for products whose “minimum durability” is less than 30 months.
As a step forward in solving this problem, our service which is able to calculate production date of cosmetics or perfume by a lot number, has been extended. This update to Cosmetic and perfume production date calculator includes ability to read batch codes of the following brands:
- American Beauty
- Angel Schlesser
- Aramis
- Armand Basi
- Badgley Mischka
- Bob Mackie
- Bumble and bumble
- Coach Fragrances

From now, using cosmetic and perfume calculator you could identify the manufacturing date of vintage perfumes for several brands like Giorgio Armani, Guerlain, Hermes, Van Cleef & Arpels.
Unfortunately some brands having their batch codes repeated each ten years. Due to that fact, batch code could have multiple meanings. For example, the same batch code could be read as ‘manufactured in 1986’, ‘in 1996’ or ‘in 2006’. To determine exact production date, you have to look at other criteria, like presence of ingredients list on the package, production period of specific perfume, know when the brand was owned by different companies etc. You can find more detailed information in this blog.
As a part of this update, support for Lalique and Serge Lutens has been added.
Support for Kanebo has been returned back.

We got unverified notice saying Shiseido does not include production date information into the batch codes anymore. Instead, they generate unique character sequence for each batch, and record correlation between production date and such batch code into the databases. If this information is correct, it’s possible to identify manufacturing date of a product only having an access to the company internal databases.
As previously mentioned, this information is unconfirmed. We’re trying to clarify and verify it. Until this will happen, support for Shiseido has been removed. We’re sorry for inconvenience.
Please contact us if you have any information regarding Shiseido batch codes.

Please notice, that several digits prefixed with “EMB” on L’Oreal products are not batch codes, but reference numbers.
Such reference number could not be used to identify the production date.
Example of such reference number: EMB99127
Basic differences between reference number and batch code:
- batch code identifies the batch in which the product was produced; in most cases it is based on manufacturing date & time.
- reference number is internal product specification.
Please do not use reference numbers for calculation; this will lead to completely wrong and unexpected results.
Get a closer look at your product and find the batch code.
Most of latest L’Oreal batch codes have 6 alphanumeric characters without “EMB” prefix, for example: 44J500.
